How to Handle Bedbug Infestations in Orange County

When it comes to common household pests, there may be none more upsetting than bedbugs. These little bloodsuckers are enough to make anyone skittish, and are notoriously tough to eliminate.

At Preferred Pest Control, bedbugs are actually something we specialize in handling. Here’s a quick guide on identifying signs of an infestation, and what to do if you suspect you’ve got one.

    Identifying Bedbugs in Your Home

Bedbugs are very tiny insects, but still large enough to be seen with the naked eye. They range from about 1/8” to 1/5” in length, with a broad, flat, roughly oval-shaped body, and are usually some shade of red or brown in color. A very hungry (or newborn) bedbug may be pale, almost translucent, but will become redder after feeding on blood.

These pests are drawn to dark, warm areas with plenty of carbon dioxide around. They’re largely nocturnal, preferring to come out to feed at night, making our mattresses some of their most opportune places to live. However, it’s not uncommon to find them in other areas such as closets, dressers, and behind wall hangings.

Bedbugs are skittish, and again not very active during the day, so it isn’t always easy to spot them directly. But there are other bits of evidence that can strongly suggest an infestation. Look for tiny red (blood) or brown (fecal matter) spots on your sheets, or cast-off skins (bedbugs shed these periodically). You may also see tiny bite marks on your own skin, though not everyone has a visible reaction to being bitten.

    Treating a Bedbug Infestation

Bedbugs are notoriously tricky to eliminate – not because they’re hard to identify, but because they’re very small and very hardy.

While some insects live for only weeks, bedbugs can grow to be nearly a year old. They can also survive for weeks between feedings, making it tough to “outlast” them by bagging up clothing and/or leaving the house.

If you see evidence of a bedbug infestation, the only safe plan is to contact your local pest control professionals. Bedbugs need to be eliminated entirely – that includes their eggs, which are so tiny that they’re actually microscopic – otherwise, the problem is going to recur quickly.

Here at Preferred Pest Control, we use a range of methods, including heat treatments and fumigation, to ensure that all bedbugs and eggs are destroyed. Our specialists will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan, based on the severity of your infestation and any personal needs you may have. These plans also include follow-up visits to confirm that the extermination was successful.
