There are a lot of different ant species that live in the United States, over 700 in fact, but the most prevalent ant in Southern California is the Argentine Ant. These ants are dark colored and about 1/8 of an inch long who are known to find their way inside homes in search of food and/or water. They eat practically anything but are most fond of sweets, while also feasting of secretions from other insects as well.

Argentine Ants reproduce within their nest and are known to form new nests around the original to stay interconnected. Their ant colony can have multiple queen ants, who can lay up to 60 eggs per day and who are mobile so they are able to establish other nests as well, unlike other ant species. These interconnected nests can overtime become a serious problem for home-owners as nests can contain millions of ants if not taken care of.

Since the Argentine Ant are not native insects and have no natural enemies, they have taken over the majority of other ants and the state. Studies have shown that they are most prevalent in places with mild winters and summer droughts which makes California the perfect place for them.

DIY methods to control Argentine Ants range from hardcore cleansers to herbal remedies but research has shown that these are ineffective to prevent ant invasions within the home. Since ant invasions are closely tied to the weather — summer and winter here in SoCal — the best method to control ants yourself if to seal and plug all holes and cracks in walls and windows where they might enter. Also, wipe down surfaces regularly where ants might have been to erase ant trails.
