    Black Widow Spiders

The Black Widow is a common spider in California and desert locations due to its ability to survive very dry and hot weather. They are attracted to clutter and trash near human structures and can be commonly found outside of homes. They are shy spiders, so they typically do not come inside your living space but rather will make their home outside in backyards – inside places they can hide during the day, such as: inside rock wall crevices, between bricks, or inside pipe holes for example.

To spot a black widow is pretty easy as it is known for its shiny jet-black exterior and red hourglass-shape mark under its abdomen.

The Black Widow spiders bite is relatively painless but medical attention should sought immediately if bitten. The symptoms one feels is like that of a bad flu (stomach-ache, sweating, fever, and numbness) and will usually subside within a few days if not medically treated. If treated with an anti-venom however, symptoms should dissipate within 30 minutes.

    Brown Widow Spiders

The Brown Widow Spider is more commonly found in subtropical locations. In North America, the Brown Widow primarily lived only in Florida until very recently showing up in Texas and Southern California.

To identify the Brown Widow, notice its tan/brown color and  look at the hourglass-shape under the abdomen to see that it is of an orange color with a yellow border. It also has a tan stipe on its abdomen with three diagonal stripes on the side.

The bite of the Brown Widow is much milder than the Black Widow and although it does contain the same amount of venom, the Brown Widow doesn’t inject as much venom as the Black Widow when it bites. The symptoms of a Brown Widow bite are not severe, as typically one does not develop any of the symptoms related to that of the Black Widow bite, besides a red mark where bitten and the initial pain of being bitten.

Managing Black and Brown Widow Spiders

To minimize Black and Brown Widows around your home, keep the area around your home clean and clutter free so that it is hard for spiders to settle down. Remember to sweep and vacuum regularly and keep things tiny as possible. Chemical control such as pesticides is possible but very difficult and only temporary against spiders as it only works if it is directly sprayed on their bodies.
