An Earwig is a small yet elongated insect with a pair of terminal appendages that resemble pincers (claw like). The females typically care for their eggs and young until they are grown. Earwigs frighten many people because of their pincers that are on the back of their little bodies. Earwigs use these pincers for defense and for sparing with other earwigs. There are known to be more than twenty species of earwigs in the USA.  Most adults range in size from 5-25 mm and are slender with two tiny pair of wings.  Some species produce a foul smelling liquid that they use for defense. Earwigs are mostly active at night. During the day they like to hide in cracks and also in damp areas. They like to live under rocks and logs and in mulch in flowerbeds. Earwigs will eat plants and insects and even old books or newspapers.

Earwigs are among the few non-social insect species that show maternal care. The mother will pay close attention to the needs of her eggs, such as warmth and protection, though studies have shown that the mother does not pay attention to the eggs as she collects them.

Earwigs are mostly scavengers, but some are omnivorous or predatory.  The abdomen of the earwig isprey, and in copulation. The forceps tend to be more curved in males than in females. The key to control is removing unessential mulch, plant debris, and other hiding places, and by reducing moisture around your home. Earwigs do pinch so be careful.

Summer is just around the corner so now would be a great time to be aware of Earwigs in and around your home. Good luck!
