Keep Pests Off the Guest List This Holiday Season
November 4, 2026
The holidays bring more food, more boxes and more people through the door. Pests notice all three. Across Orange County, from Huntington Beach and Newport Beach to Irvine, Tustin and Fountain Valley, this is the time of year when a small problem can show up at the worst possible moment.
Nobody wants a roach crossing the kitchen floor during Thanksgiving dinner or a mouse running through the dining room on a full Saturday night. A little prep now goes a long way, whether you’re getting your home ready for family or your business ready for the busy season.
Why Pests Pick Up Around the Holidays
Cooler nights push rodents indoors just as kitchens get busier. Crumbs, grease, full trash cans and packed pantries give them plenty to eat. Winter rain can also send ants inside looking for dry ground.
Then there’s everything we carry in ourselves. Boxes from the garage, grocery bags, firewood, packages and fresh-cut trees can all bring along a few unwanted guests.
Getting Your Home Ready
Check your decorations before they come inside. Boxes that sat in the garage or attic all year can hide spiders, silverfish and signs of rodents. Open them outside if you can. Look for droppings, chewed paper and webbing, and swap old cardboard for sealed plastic bins.
Shake out the tree. Fresh-cut trees can carry spiders and other small insects. Give yours a good shake outside before bringing it in.
Go through the pantry. Baking supplies often sit for months before holiday cooking starts. Look for tiny moths, small beetles or webbing in flour, nuts and spices. Toss anything that looks off and store the rest in sealed containers.
Keep firewood outside. Stack it off the ground and away from the house, and only bring in what you’ll burn that day.
Clean up after every gathering. Wipe counters, take out the trash and don’t leave food out overnight. Roaches and ants only need a little to keep coming back.
Keep an eye out after guests leave. Bed bugs travel in luggage and coats. Check guest beds for small dark spots or live bugs, especially along the mattress seams.
Getting Your Business Ready
Businesses have even more riding on this time of year. A single sighting can turn into a bad review, a failed inspection or a lost customer right when you can least afford it.
Restaurants and catering. More covers means more grease, more food waste and more deliveries. Stay on top of floor drains, the areas under equipment and the dumpster pad. Check deliveries before they go into storage, since roaches can ride in on cardboard.
Retail and warehouses. Extra inventory means stacks of boxes that don’t move for weeks. That’s perfect cover for rodents and roaches. Keep stock off the floor and away from walls so you can see what’s going on, and break down empty cardboard quickly.
Offices. Holiday potlucks and desk snacks attract ants fast. Keep food in the break room, wipe it down at the end of the day and empty the trash before the weekend.
Apartments and property managers. One unit’s problem can quickly become the whole building’s. Encourage tenants to report activity early, and look for gaps around plumbing and trash areas before the holiday rush.
Hotels and short-term rentals. Busy travel weeks raise the risk of bed bugs. Train your staff to check mattress seams and headboards at every turnover.
Signs You’ve Already Got Company
- Droppings in the pantry, garage, attic or under sinks
- Scratching in the walls or ceiling at night
- Ant trails along counters, baseboards or windows
- Small dark roaches in the kitchen or bathroom after dark
- Chewed boxes, wires or food packaging
If you’re seeing any of these now, don’t wait until after New Year’s. Pests that settle in during the holidays are usually still there when the decorations come down.
