Rodents Moving In for the Winter: What Orange County Homeowners Need to Know

    October 26, 2026

The nights are getting cooler across Orange County, and you’re not the only one who’s noticed. Roof rats and house mice spend summer outside, living in palm trees, ivy, citrus trees and woodpiles. Once temperatures drop they go looking for somewhere warm, dry and close to food. Too often that’s your attic, garage or the space inside your walls.

Late October through winter is when rodent calls pick up across Orange County, from Huntington Beach and Newport Beach to Irvine, Tustin and Fountain Valley. Here’s what to look for and how to stop it before a few rodents turn into a colony.

The Rodents Moving Into OC Homes

Roof rats are the most common problem rodent in Orange County. They’re excellent climbers. They run along fences, power lines and tree branches, then get in through roof vents, gaps under tiles and openings where the roofline meets the eaves. Once inside, they nest in attic insulation.

House mice are smaller and tend to come in at ground level: garage door gaps, utility line openings and weep screeds along the foundation. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime.

Norway rats are bigger and heavier. They burrow, and they’re more likely to show up around foundations, crawl spaces and sewer-connected areas.

    Warning Signs You’ve Got Company

    • Droppings in the attic, garage, pantry, or under sinks
    • Scratching or scurrying sounds at night, especially in the ceiling or walls
    • Gnaw marks on stored boxes, wood, wiring or plastic containers
    • Grease rub marks along walls and beams where rodents travel the same route every night
    • Shredded insulation, paper or fabric used for nesting
    • Pets acting strange: staring at walls or pawing at cabinets
    • Chewed fruit on your citrus or avocado trees, a classic roof rat sign

If you’re seeing even one of these, rodents are probably already inside.

Why You Can’t Wait Until Spring

Rodents breed fast. One female rat can have several litters a year, and mice multiply even faster. A small problem in November can be a full infestation by February.

They also do real damage. Rodents chew constantly, and wiring in attics and walls is a common target, which creates a fire risk. They contaminate insulation and stored belongings with droppings and urine, and they can carry bacteria and diseases that are a concern for families with kids and pets.

    Why DIY Usually Falls Short

Store-bought traps and baits can catch a rodent or two, but they don’t solve the real problem: how they’re getting in. If the entry points stay open, new rodents just replace the ones you caught.

Poison baits cause their own problems. A rodent can eat bait and die inside a wall, leaving an odor you can’t reach. Baits also put pets, kids and local wildlife like owls and hawks at risk. California has tightened its rules on many rat poisons for that reason.

How Preferred Pest Control Handles Rodents

We focus on keeping rodents out for good, not just catching the ones already inside.

    1. Full inspection: roofline, attic, vents, foundation, garage and yard to find activity and every entry point
    2. Removal: targeted trapping to clear out the rodents already inside
    3. Exclusion: sealing entry points with durable materials rodents can’t chew through
    4. Eco-friendly methods: treatments that are safe for kids and pets
    5. Follow-up: making sure the problem is solved, not just reduced

Quick Prevention Tips for OC Homeowners

    • Trim tree branches and vines back from your roof and walls
    • Pick up fallen fruit from citrus and avocado trees
    • Store pet food and birdseed in sealed containers
    • Keep firewood and storage boxes off the ground and away from the house
    • Check that garage door seals and roof vent screens are intact
