    American Cockroaches

The American Cockroach are about 3 inches in length, have a red/brown brown color, and have a yellow outline behind their head. These cockroaches have wings and are able to fly when they reach adulthood. Usually an outdoor pest who prefers to hide in dark damp places like flowerbeds and sewers, American cockroaches also can be found indoors in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. When inside homes or businesses, American cockroaches eat food particles left on floors and small insects.

How do American cockroaches enter Orange County homes? Typically, they pass under doors, through open windows, or through other entryways such as cracks in garage doors. To avoid an infestation of American cockroaches, keep entry ways closed whenever possible and seal any cracks or holes that you notice in any doors or windows.

How to tell if you have an American cockroach infestation? The first sign of an infestation is seeing active cockroaches. Also look to see if their droppings can be found in dark hiding places. You can identify droppings by the blunt ends and ridges on the sides. Another sign is odor. Yes, American cockroaches, when in groups, emit a pheromone that has a musty smell to it that we humans can smell sometimes. One more sign is egg capsules. Dark red/brown egg casings can be found where American cockroaches hide, so check around all appliances and cabinets (anywhere that is warm, damp, and dark).

    German Cockroaches

The German Cockroach is a smaller cockroach, measuring under 1 inch, and are tan in color with two black stripes behind their head. These cockroaches also have wings but are known not to use them and prefer to scurry away when found. The German cockroach is most commonly found inside and like the American cockroach, they also are attracted to dark, humid areas of the home such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and in plumbing. They enter homes usually by being brought in, hiding in boxes/containers.

How to tell if you have a German cockroach infestation? One way is be noticing the pepper-like look to their droppings or dropping smears along walls, counter tops, and floors. Like American cockroaches, German cockroaches also leave egg casings laying around their hiding places and also emit a pheromone with a musty smell that humans can pick up on.

If you suspect that you have an infestation of German cockroaches, it can prove to be more serious than an American cockroach problem as German roaches reproduce more frequently with each egg casing containing up to 40 eggs vs the American cockroach 16 eggs. Another reason is that German roaches are smaller and can hide better than American roaches.
