There are over 12,000 species of ants on planet Earth and many more believed to be undiscovered. It’s no wonder they outnumber us by 1,500,000 to 1!

With so different species of ants around the globe, we should be thankful that California only has 270 to deal with and the most common type that plagues Orange County and Southern California homes is the Argentine Ant. If you guessed that this type is native to Argentina, you are correct! They were brought to the US by coffee ships from Brazil in the late 1890s and have taken over ever since.

The Argentine Ant

The Argentine ants are very adaptable for a few reasons. Unlike other types of ants, the Argentine ant can nest almost anywhere such as trees, homes, under homes, and in the ground among other places. Their nests are huge, with several dozen queens, and ant workers numbering over 1 million.

Being relatively new to the area, they have no natural predators and unlike other ants who mate above ground and are open to getting eaten, Argentine ants mate below ground and are protected.

Argentine ants are smart and very good at cooperating and communicating with each other. If ever the colony is threatened by water, pesticide, or other factors, a queen ant takes several thousand worker ants and moves to a different location to survive.

Another example of their cooperation can be found within super colonies. That’s right, Argentine ants (unlike other ant colonies that fight to the death) work together to form colonies containing tens of millions of ants!

The Argentine Treatment

So how do you stop these super ants? Well there is some good news. Argentine ants are known to be very sensitive to chemicals which can repel them easily. Total elimination of ants from outdoors can prove to be an unrealistic and impractical venture but management is possible.

Methods have been developed over the years to take advantage of their adaptive and cooperative ways. Treatment targets the nests by having the Argentine ant carry back home the product. The product spreads within the nest and eventually kills the entire colony.

Argentine ants will continue to exist within our environment no matter how hard we try to eliminate them but at least Preferred Pest Control can help them stay out of your home or business!
