Clothes Moths Facts

The Clothes Moth is a lot smaller than the normal moths you’re more accustomed to seeing. They measure around 12mm, are a shiny yellowish color, and have red hairs on their heads. Unlike typical moths, the clothes moth likes darkness and does not fly towards light. In fact, they rarely fly at all and prefer to hide in dark spaces so check your attic, garages, closets, or any other dark areas of the house for these pests.

As their name suggests, the clothes moth eats fabric and can easily destroy your clothing by creating holes or damaging your carpets and upholstery among other things. Clothes moths, like other insects such as carpet beetles, silverfish, and cockroaches, are able to eat the animal derived protein called keratin from fabric material. Like the butterfly, clothes moths also go through metamorphosis from egg, larvae, pupa, and adult so be on the lookout for small white colored caterpillars with brown colored heads around the house.

Clothes moths are most commonly found in the summer months when it is warm but they can be found at any time throughout the year, especially here in Orange County where it’s fairly warm all year round!
