Ants are social insects and form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to large territories and consist of millions of individuals. Ants are very social and they maintain multiple nests within a small area of 100 feet or less from each other. Larger colonies consist mostly of sterile, wingless females forming castes of “workers”, “soldiers”, or other specialized groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called “drones” and one or more fertile females called “queens”. Ants have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa (cocoon), and adult.

They typically start by nesting their ant site in or on moist, wood such as trees and old stumps and then they eventually move indoors when searching for food and water.
